How fast is the 2020 Corvette Stingray?
Chevy confirms that the 2020 Chevrolet C8 Corvette is capable of hitting 194 miles per hour. While it’s impressive that the Corvette is under $60,000 its performance and capabilities are far more impressive. The Corvette Stingray Coupe with the Z51 Package is capable of hitting 0 to 60 miles per hour in just 2.9 seconds while covering the quarter-mile in 11.2 seconds at 121 miles per hour. However, these numbers are not yet offered for the convertible model, nonetheless, the performance shouldn’t be much different. It’s expected that the convertible model will be a bit slower due to the extra weight of the roof mechanism that gives the roof the ability to open and close.
Alex MacDonald, the C8 Performance Manager explained, “The performance of the 2020 Stingray has far exceeded our expectations. Moving more weight over the rear wheels helps us get off the line quicker, but it’s the integration between the powertrain and chassis that really takes the performance to new levels.”
Currently, the Corvette C8 has a 6.2 liter LT2 V8 engine rated at 490 horsepower and 465 pound-feet of torque and in the base form it is 495 horsepower with 470 pound-feet of torque. To achieve these remarkable performance numbers, drivers will have to initiate a “performance launch” by putting the vehicle in Track mode and pressing the traction button and fully releasing the brake and accelerate pedal at the same time. This results in the vehicle being put in Performance Traction Management mode for Magnetic Ride Control-equipped cars or Competitive driving mode.
One of the main contributors to the performance of the all-new Chevy Corvette is the eight-speed dual-clutch transaxle. The manual transmission supplier, Tremec, aspired to provide “uninterrupted torque delivery with smooth transitions and quick shifts.
Terri Schulke, the Product Engineer explained, “The goal from the beginning was to design a transmission worthy of an exotic supercar that is fun to drive every day,” GM’s global chief engineer of transmissions. We achieved that goal by combining the best attributes of the LT2 and the DCT, and I think the impressive performance numbers speak for themselves.”
